What is Clinical Informatics?

At its heart, clinical informatics promotes the proactive, efficient, and comprehensive use of tools and processes to capture, generate, manage, and share clinical information for the care and health of individual patients or across target populations. Consumers of this clinical information includes patients, clinicians, researchers, and public health initiatives, to name a few.

Foundational to good clinical informatics efforts is the realization that users of any information system require information literacy skills to access, locate, analyze and apply clinical information from electronic health records (EHRs). To achieve this level of information literacy requires deliberate educational efforts which include hands-on and scenario-based education approaches. Once those skills are acquired, users will become a more proficient and confident user of their EHR. Those confident users then are more likely to be consistent advocates for using their EHR. In fact, a 2015 study concludes that using an EHR is strongly associated with safe practices for medication safety, handoffs and transitions, practice management and culture, and patient education and communication. Obviously, these are wonderful outcomes for using an EHR.

Clinical informatics supports an information-based approach to healthcare delivery. Praesidio Healthcare Consulting’s clinical informaticist’s efforts will help identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in clinical practice. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology. We will mentor and train your existing staff on best practice procedures, and when needed, we can even act as your clinical informatics voice to vendors and on internal projects.
